‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Moved Back To 2020 Release
  |  @   |

Wonder Woman 1984 started production earlier this year with the intent to be released in theaters in November of next year. However, things have changed.

Now Warner Bros. is pushing back its release all the way to June 5, 2020. That’s a whole seven months later than it was supposed to hit theaters. But there may be a reason for that move. More on the report below.

Gal Gadot posted the Wonder Woman 1984 release date change on her official Twitter account:

The move takes the film away from competing with Sonic the Hedgehog (November 8), the untitled Kingsman 3 film (November 8th), the untitled Terminator project (November 15), an untitled Fox Marvel film (November 22), and Frozen 2 (November 27).

With its new June 2020 date on the schedule, the sequel will now have to contend with an untitled Pixar film (June 19), In the Heights (June 26), Top Gun 2 (June 26), and another untitled Fox Marvel film (June 26).

This could be seen as a strategic move to get away from an otherwise crowded fall date. There are already five huge studio films set for release in November, some of which are sequels. The move from its 2019 date also shifts Wonder Woman 1984 away from releasing around the same time as another DC film, Todd Phillips’ The Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix (October 4th).

The “changing landscape” Gadot could be referring to is the changes that are happening within Warner Bros.’ DC films. Walter Hamada said that he would be rebranding the DC slate by culling certain titles, elevating others, keeping an eye on the big marquee heroes while also developing lesser-known characters that could pop big.

Now, the new date does come with a bit of a downside. WB is taking The Six Billion Dollar Man off its release schedule. It was set to open on Wonder Woman 1984‘s new date. Mark Wahlberg was set the play the title character based on the popular 1970s TV show. However, the pic was without a director.

Wonder Woman 1984 brings back director Patty Jenkins and Gadot as the title character, who is now living in the age of the Cold War. Chris Pine also returns. Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig also star.

The first Wonder Woman grossed a wondrous $821 million worldwide. And it also proved that there was an interest in female superhero standalone films.
