The Oscar for Best Animated Feature goes to one of five nominees each and every year. And this year will be no different as there will be over 25 films competing for one of those five nominations. They range from the long-awaited superhero sequel The Incredibles 2, Sony’s seemingly spectacular Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the holiday classic take on Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch, and so much more. Check out the full list below.
Here are the 25 films that will be competing for a nomination for Best Animated Feature:
Ana y Bruno
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch
Early Man
Fireworks
Have a Nice Day
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
The Laws of the Universe – Part I
Liz and the Blue Bird
Lu Over the Wall
MFKZ
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
Mirai
The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl
On Happiness Road
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Ruben Brandt, Collector
Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero
Sherlock Gnomes
Smallfoot
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Tall Tales
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies
Tito and the Birds
Now, there is a pretty good chance that a majority of the nominations will go to a big studio. Disney and Pixar are likely to lock in their nominations for Ralph Breaks the Internet and Incredibles 2. Their predecessors each earned a nomination in their respective years, with the latter winning and the former losing to a Pixar film. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has such a unique style of animation, it’s going to be hard to believe it won’t earn itself a nomination. Meanwhile, Isle of Dog uses stop-motion animation, a technique so rarely seen that it should be nominated. And then there’s Early Man, which uses claymation, which is just another form of stop-motion animation, but with clay.
Variety points out that some of these features have yet to be screened, which makes it all that much harder to determine whether or not they deserve a spot. That being said, the competition is just as fierce as it has ever been. But I’m hoping that this will draw attention to films like The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, an anime with hints of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours.
One can only hope.
The 2019 Oscar nominations will be announced January 22, 2019 and the 91st Academy Awards will air on ABC on February 24, 2019.
