‘Vox Lux’ Trailer: Natalie Portman Music Star Film Battles Some Personal Demons
  |  @   |

This is the year of music star-based films. First there was A Star is Born. Next week there will be Bohemian Rhapsody. And to close out the year, there will be Vox Lux, starring Natalie Portman.

Neon has released the first trailer for the film, which sees Portman playing a music superstar whose career launched due to a personal tragedy. But after suffering a scandalous incident, she is ready for a comeback, while also trying to overcome some of her personal demons and navigating motherhood. Check out the trailer below.

Let’s start off with the official plot synopsis:

VOX LUX, A 20th Century Portrait, begins in 1999 when teenage Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) survives a violent tragedy. After singing at a memorial service, Celeste transforms into a burgeoning pop star with the help of her songwriter sister (Stacy Martin) and talent manager (Jude Law). Celeste’s meteoric rise to fame dovetails with a personal and national loss of innocence, consequently elevating the young powerhouse to a new kind of celebrity: American icon, secular deity, global superstar.

By 2017, adult Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mounting a comeback after a scandalous incident almost derailed her career. Touring in support of her sixth album, a compendium of sci-fi anthems entitled, “Vox Lux,” the indomitable, foul-mouthed pop savior must overcome her personal and familial struggles to navigate motherhood, madness and monolithic fame.

Now this tells us a few things. We will be seeing the film from two different perspectives. Celeste in her young career and then her much older one. Obviously, when a film has someone like Portman on board, a good majority of the marketing campaign will focus on her.

That being said, it will be interesting to see how those personal tragedies and scandals will transform Celeste.

The film actually already had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year where it was met with rave reviews. It currently stands with a 90% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and scored an 84% on Metacritic.

Written and directed by Brady Corbet and featuring an original songs written by Sia, Vox Lux opens in theaters on December 7, 2018.
