Five years ago, AMC’s Breaking Bad starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul came to an end. It was literally the perfect finish to a great show. But it’s not over. Not by a long shot.
That’s because multiple reports are confirming that a Breaking Bad film is in the works from the creator of the TV series Vince Gilligan. More on the report below.
Variety says Gilligan will be working on a two-hour Breaking Bad project. But it is unclear if the project is being made for a theatrical release or if it will be on television.
There are very few details about the project. So it’s not clear if it will be a prequel like Better Call Saul or if it will take place after the events of Breaking Bad. And there is no telling who could appear because it’s not clear if any of the original cast members are involved. However, it will be set in existing Breaking Bad franchise.
But The Albuquerque Journal reports that the film will be produced under the working title Greenbrier. Reports say that the film “tracks the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.” So if you were hoping to see Jesse Pinkman search for Brock or Walter White faking his death so he can watch Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, then you’re out of luck.
THR says Gilligan will write the script, executive produce, and possibly direct. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are also on board. Production will take place in New Mexico and shoot from this month to February of next year.
Breaking Bad aired on AMC for five seasons from 2008 to 2013. The cable network then greenlit the prequel spinoff Better Call Saul, which debuted in 2015. The show brought Bob Odenkirk back to reprise his role as Saul Goodman.
The news comes on the heels of AMC announcing that they would be airing three The Walking Dead films starring Andrew Lincoln. But a Breaking Bad film would be the first major project that comes from the three-year exclusive deal Gillian signed with Sony TV back in July.
No word yet on a possible release or air date. Of course, we will be keeping a close eye on the project as soon as more developments come in.
