‘Jonny Quest’ Will Now Be Directed By ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay

A film adaptation of Jonny Quest has been in the work for quite some time. Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron were poised to star in the film with Johnson playing Race Bannon and Efron as the titular character. That project fell through. Then Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct, using a script from Terry Rossio, in 2015.

However, now it looks like he is no longer involved as The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay has been named the new director. More on the report, below.

The Wrap says McKay will direct the Jonny Quest film for Warner Bros. Though no other details were provided. Ridgeback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich along with Adrian Askarieh of Prime Universe are producing the action-adventure movie. Daniel Alter will executive produce.

Jonny Quest is the popular 1965 Hanna Barbara animated series that followed the adventures of the titular 11-year-old boy, his government scientist father, Jonny’s kid sidekick, named Hadji, and the group’s handsome bodyguard, secret agent Race Bannon.

Episodes of Jonny Quest blended mystery, adventure, action, intrigue, scientific marvels, and humor as the group traveled everywhere from the Sargasso Sea to equatorial Africa.

Though no castings have been officially announced, a source close to the project tells the site that they are looking for a major movie star to play Bannon.

McKay’s television credits include directing several episodes of Moral Orel, as well as serving as editor on Robot Chicken. He also directed episodes of Titan Maximum on Cartoon Network. His film credits include co-directing The LEGO Movie with Phil Lord and Chris Miller. He then went on to direct The LEGO Batman Movie.

In 2017, McKay was named director of the live-action Nightwing movie. While the lack of development indicates the film is dead, McKay has gone on record saying otherwise. Next up for McKay is the Dungeons and Dragons film for Paramount Pictures.

After what looked like a rotating door of directors, let’s hope this one finally sticks. We will keep you posted on any developments as soon as they come in.
