Sure, Aquaman may have had a terrible introduction in Justice League, but the character’s standalone film promises to be the kind of epic that befits a king. And a king would not be king if he didn’t give to the people, if you are an Amazon Prime member that is. So Amazon Prime members will get to see Aquaman five days before its theatrical release. Additionally, there is a brand new trailer that will prove this will be something worth watching. More on the early release plus the trailer here below.
First, the early release. Amazon Prime members can head over to Amazon.com/Aquaman to find theaters that will play Aquaman on December 15 at 7:00 PM. Members will be able to purchase up to 10 tickets. Participating theaters include AMC, Regal, National Amusement Theaters, and ArcLight Cinemas.
This isn’t an entirely new practice. Sony did it last year with Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. And it worked, as it went on to be one of the highest grossing films of the year. Then there’s the sequel that’s already in the works. So if it worked for them, it should work for other films as well. But the move also shows how much confidence Warner Bros. has in Aquaman. The film was actually screened for critics this past weekend. However, they all signed NDAs that bar them for disclosing their thoughts yet. Still, it’s great to see that a major studio is willing to release it so far in advance. And remember, WB also released Crazy Rich Asians in select theaters a week before the film’s official release. And look how well that film did.
As for the trailer itself, its the final trailer before the film hits theaters. So it’s safe to say that it is throwing everything but the oceans at us. This is by far the deepest trailer of them all as it goes to explain the plot and how Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) fits into all of this. We even get our first look at Willem DaFoe, who will prepare Arthur for the throne. A throne that Orm/Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) feels belongs to him. Luckily, Arthur has the help of Mera (Amber Heard), a fierce Atlantian, who will help him learn about his lineage; Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison), Arthur’s father; and Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), Arthur’s Atlantian mother.
The film also stars Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the vengeful Black Manta.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime””one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be”¦a king.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman opens in theaters on December 21, 2018.
