Guillermo del Toro Reveals List Of Unproduced Screenplays
  |  @   |

There’s no doubt that Guillermo del Toro is an accomplished filmmaker. The Academy Award-winning director behind The Shape of Water has been behind the lens of a handful of projects like Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, the Hellboy films, and Blade II.

But despite all the acclaim he has gotten in the past, del Toro has more than a handful of projects that are unproduced. At The Mountains of Madness, Beauty and the Beast, Fantastic Voyage, and a Hulk TV series, are all promising titles that went unmade. And now, he has revealed a long list of other projects that have gone unproduced. Check out the full list, below.

Del Toro revealed the list on his official Twitter account:

Okay, first of all, why haven’t these films been made yet? Second question, why haven’t these films been made yet?

We’ve been covering a lot of del Toro projects throughout the years, so some of these titles are very familiar to us. At The Mountains Of Madness seemed ripe for production, especially with the talent behind it. Tom Cruise would have starred and James Cameron would have been the film’s producer.

This is, perhaps, the most infamous of unproduced films with del Toro’s name on it. Based on the H.P. Lovecraft novel of the same name, it first found a home at Warner Bros. However, an increasing budget and a big-budget R-rated horror film proved to be the film’s downfall. Universal tried to revive the project with the condition that it be released as a PG-13 film, something that del Toro wasn’t on board with. That’s around when the project fell apart, and del Toro ultimately moved on to direct Pacific Rim.

Justice League Dark is one of the more recent projects that have fallen to the unproduced wayside. The film would have visited a much darker side to the DC Extended Universe as the project would have explored the supernatural. The project, which was first announced in 2015, would have brought John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Shade the Changing Man, and Deadman together.

However, because WB focused on other DCEU prospects, there was no way that it was going to be a part of the DCEU. Eventually, del Toro dropped out as director to become the film’s producer. Doug Liman was attached to direct at one point in time, but he also left the project. And now, it’s unclear what will happen to the film. Although, there is the animated feature from last year.

Back in 2016, Fantastic Voyage was a project that was first announced when Pacific Rim 2 was put on hold. Although del Toro went on to bigger things, Fantastic Voyage was something that was in the works long before he came on board. It would have brought Cameron and del Toro together, a partnership that seems to need to happen sooner than later. However, like At The Mountains of Madness, it just never happened. So it looks like the project is on hold. But in the age of remakes, it seems like Fantastic Voyage would be something that deserves a contemporary spin.

It’s no secret that Disney has been reaching into their amusement park line up to turn their rides into live-action films. Following the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, the studio looked towards Haunted Mansion or rather rebooting it with del Toro in hopes that people would forget about the Eddie Murphy version.

It seemed to make sense since del Toro is a master at creating sympathetic supernatural characters. At one point, Ryan Gosling was going to appear in it. But for whatever reason, it just never got off the ground. Which is unfortunate, because the ride itself has such a rich mythology that it is begging to have its story told.

Then there’s The Witches. del Toro’s retelling of the Ronald Dahl children’s novel of the same name was something that was first announced way back in 2008. While the director has moved on to other things and written other scripts, it is a project that he remains attached to, at least as a producer. Based on our last report, Robert Zemeckis is now going to direct.

Before Emma Watson was the Beauty in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, she was set to appear as the Beauty in WB’s version of the fairy tale directed by del Toro. Announced in the spring of 2011, it is something, like all of the aforementioned titles, that never got produced.

Finally, there’s the unproduced Hulk TV series. Long before the success of The Avengers and the release of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there was a Hulk TV show in development at ABC. But because he was so popular in the film, he never got his chance to tell his own story on TV. But, now that Disney plans on releasing their own Marvel shows on their streaming site, there could be a chance that a Hulk TV show could happen.

As del Toro said, these scripts are finished. So they are just waiting to be produced. The cinematic climate is changing, and audiences want something like what del Toro has written. If anything, he has already proven himself to be a great director that you should not pass up on. So let’s just hope one of the studios takes another look at these scripts. Or at least, takes a shot at something that could be great.

Of course, we will keep you up to date should any of these projects be revived. Chances are, it probably won’t happen.
