‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Gets A Sequel and Female Spinoff
  |  @   |

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is going to be spinning more webs and further expanding its universe by releasing a sequel and female spinoff.

New reports confirm that there will be a sequel and spinoff featuring female heroes in the Spider-Man universe of characters. More on the report, below.

THR says Sony Pictures Animation is in the very early stages of development for both projects, so there are no details as to what either film could be about. However, the announcement comes ahead of the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse release, which is on December 14, 2018. So it’s pretty much a good sign that the studio has full confidence in the film. Now comes another exciting part. The creative teams behind both projects.

First, the sequel. Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix’s Voltron) will be behind the sequel. If you’re a fan of either title – I’m especially fond of Voltron – then you know Dos Santos is the right person for the job. Not only can he build upon the mythology, but he also has a great appreciation for source material. So it should be interesting to see if he goes where directors Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey are leaving off. One thing seems clear, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a character of mixed-race, will return to lead the sequel.

Next, the all-female spinoff. As aforementioned, it will feature all of the female allies of Spider-Man in an all new adventure. So it’s very likely that Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) will return. Not only that, but Black Cat and Silk could join the team. We will just have to wait and see. Spider-Woman and Madame Web are also possible contenders. Lauren Montgomery is in talks to direct. She’s directed DC animated films like Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.

Amy Pascal, who is a producer on Into The Spider-Verse and many of the live-action films, will return to produce the sequel and spinoff. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who also produced the film, are expected to return in some sort of creative capacity. However, they have not signed any deals. Avi Arad could return as well. But that remains to be seen.

Sony is capitalizing on the success following Venom. Though that film has been met with mixed results by critics, it has been a commercial success. Not only that, we are also getting other live-action spinoffs based on Spider-Man supporting heroes and villains like Kraven and Morbius.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has already screened for critics, some of whom say is one of the best-animated films of the year. This obviously puts it in contention for an Academy Award.
