Candyman 1992

Well, that didn’t take long. After it was reported that Jordan Peele would be acting as a producer on a new Candyman spiritual sequel, there is now a new director attached.

Reports confirm Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) will help bring back Candyman, who has been played by Tony Todd in previous installments, to the big screen. More on the report below,

Per Variety, the spiritual sequel, which is also acting as a reboot, returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. Like the original, the sequel will be a horror that addresses black representation in film.

Production is set to begin in the spring of next year and will be released by Universal in 2020. Peele will produce through his Monkeypaw Productions. Also producing is Win Rosenfeld.

MGM Motion Picture Group president Jonathan Glickman said of the reboot:

“We cannot wait for the world to see what the mind-blowing combination of Jordan, Win, and Nia bring to the legend of Candyman. They have created a story that will not only pay reverence to Clive Barker‘s haunting and brilliant source material, but is also thoroughly modern and will bring in a whole new generation of fans.”

Peel added:

“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside “˜Night of the Living Dead,’ “˜Candyman’ was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker “” and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the “˜Candyman’ canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

Candyman is based on a short story written by Barker. The film would eventually go on to be a feature-length horror directed by Bernard Rose. Released back in 1992, the film wasn’t a huge hit, but it did go on to be a cult phenomenon. Check out our review of the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray here. Here’s the official plot synopsis of the original:

Candyman was the son of a slave who became prosperous after developing a system for mass-producing shoes during the Civil War. He grew up in a polite society and became a well-known artist, sought after for his talent in producing portraits. After falling in love with and fathering a child with a white woman in 1890, Candyman was set upon by a lynch mob hired by his lover’s father; they cut off his painting hand and replaced it with a hook. He was smeared with honey stolen from an apiary, attracting hungry bees which stung him to death.

The new Candyman is slated to hit theaters on June 12, 2020.
