Elf is the story of Buddy (Will Ferrell), an orphan who as a baby, crawled into Santa’s bag and accidentally went to the North Pole. One of the elves (Bob Newhart) decides to raise him as his own. 30 years later, Buddy is the biggest elf in the toyshop and not very good at making toys. He accidentally overhears that not only is he not an elf, but he is a human and his father is in New York City. Not only that, he is on the “naughty list.” Hoping to find him anyway for a special reunion, Buddy begins his journey to New York for Christmas.

Things do not go as planned when he gets there, as his children’s book publisher father, Walter (James Caan), is as crabby as they come and throws him out. On his way out, he mentions his birth mother. He wanders over to Gimbels and gets mistaken for an employee (because of his elf outfit), meets Jovie (Zooey Deschanel), and falls instantly in love. Since Santa is coming tomorrow, what’s an elf to do? Decorate of course, which makes for a fun scene.

I’ve seen this movie every Christmas, and it’s a must see for everyone, whether the regular version (which is included in this DVD set) or the sing-a-long. Ferrell is fantastic, Deschenel and Ferrell’s little love story is adorable, the meaning of Christmas brings the swell to the heart, and Peter Dinklage is great and the swaggering executive who beats up Buddy.

Much like a popup video, this version of Elf not only has the words to the songs for children (and adults) to sing along, but has fun facts and opinions in boxes in the corners of the screen pop up randomly throughout the movie.

– Random Buddy Thought: Jack in the Boxes should be illegal (we agree).
