Crazy Rich Asians Header

It was a crazy rich year for everyone involved with Crazy Rich Asians. Not only did it make truckloads of money, it’s also a turning point in the representation movement, particularly for Asian representation.

So after the film earned itself two Golden Globe nominations, plans for the sequels are coming to light. According to new reports, the plan now is to shoot the two sequels to Kevin Kwan‘s novels back-to-back. More on the report below.

Crazy Rich Asians producer Nina Jacobson spoke to Deadline about shooting the two films, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, back-to-back.

Jacobson says that Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli are working on the script, and that they’ll make it up to fans who are waiting by filming the two sequels back-to-back.

No one could have predicted how crazy successful Crazy Rich Asians would be. The film earned over $237 million at the box office on a $30 million budget. As such, the stocks for stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Sonoya Mizuno, Awkwafina, and Michelle Yeoh have skyrocketed.

Golding is already signed on for other films like Paul Feig’s Last Christmas, where she will be reunited with Yeoh, and Guy Ritchie’s Toff Guys. Chan can next be seen in Captain Marvel.

Director Jon M. Chu‘s stock has also gone up. After the success of Crazy Rich Asians, the director signed on for a film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit In the Heights. He will presumably jump back into finishing off the trilogy as soon as he is done with that.

So with everyone’s schedules worked out, we can expect the two films to be shooting sometime in 2020. This is not an uncommon practice for films. The Matrix and Back to the Future closed out their trilogies by shooting back-to-back. The same goes for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, as well as the upcoming Avatar sequels. So it’s going to be a while before fans can revisit this fascinating world where Rachel looks for her father, who currently resides in China.

Of course, we will keep you up-to-date should any new developments come in.
