Jordan Peele will be following his directorial debut Get Out with Us. Though the film isn’t due out in theaters until next March, new photos are telling us what we should expect from the upcoming film.
Additionally, Us star Lupita Nyong’o is talking about her desire to work with Peele and the films she had to watch in order to prep for the film. More on that and the images below.
The new images come to us from Entertainment Weekly, who shared a photo of Nyong’o wielding a weapon to defend herself from her mysterious attacker. Again, the plot of the film is shrouded in mystery. However, unlike The Twilight Zone vibes we got in Get Out, Us will have something more horrific which also stays true to Peele’s love of movies. Here’s what he told EW:
“For my second feature, I wanted to create a monster mythology. I wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre but still held on to my love of movies that are twisted but fun.”
Based on the little details that have been revealed, the film will center on Adelaide and Gabe Wilson (Nyong’o and Winston Duke) taking their family to an old childhood beachside home in Northern California for the summer. Along with their friends the Tyler family, which includes Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker:
“Adelaide becomes increasingly more paranoid that something bad will happen to her family. As night falls, the Wilsons see four figures holding hands and standing silently at the bottom of their driveway.”
The images that appear exclusively at EW show that these four figures bear a striking resemblance to Adelaide’s family. So what exactly is going on? Well, we will probably get a few answers when the teaser trailer is released on Christmas Day.
As for Nyong’o, she says she is a huge fan of Get Out, which is one of the many reasons why she wanted to work with Peele. But doing something like this, following roles in films like 12 Years A Slave, Black Panther, and Star Wars, was something out of her wheelhouse. It was a challenge she couldn’t wait to take on:
“The very fact that I have not done anything like it was appealing, because it promised growth and excitement and new territory.”
So in order to prepare for the role, Peele gave Nyong’o 10 films to watch. They are: Dead Again, The Shining, The Babadook, It Follows, A Tale of Two Sisters, The Birds, Funny Games, Martyrs, Let the Right One In, and The Sixth Sense.
Now, what’s interesting about Adelaide’s past traumas is that it might relate to the monsters that appear in the film. Peele reveals that these monsters are called the Tethers. An interesting choice for a name.
