Us

Our first look at Jordan Peele‘s latest Us revealed that the filmmaker wants to create a monster mythology as a follow-up to his Oscar-winning Get Out.

And now, Universal Pictures has just released the first trailer for the upcoming film. Starring Black Panther stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, Us sees a family going on a summer vacation getaway which seems to be going swimmingly until a strange malevolent presence starts to show up. Check out the full trailer, below.

Even with what we know now about Us, there still seems to be a veil of mystery that surrounds the film. We know that Adelaide is haunted by an unresolved trauma in her past and it has come to terrorize her family. Obviously, there is more to it than that. But unlike Get Out, which addresses race, Peele wants Us to let audiences know that we can be our own worst enemies. In an interview with THR, the director said:

“Very important for me was to have a black family at the center of a horror film. But it’s also important to note, unlike Get Out, Us is not about race. It is instead about something that I feel has become an undeniable truth. And that is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies.”

So it looks like the unseen Tethers, the monsters that are featured in the film, are able to manifest themselves into us, or at least a very scary version of ourselves. And it looks like Peele will use that to make a point:

“I dedicated a lot of myself to create a new horror mythology and a new monster. I think that monsters and stories about monsters are one of our best ways of getting at deeper truths and facing our fears as a society.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline, Us, from Monkeypaw Productions, stars Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex) for an idyllic summer getaway.

Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.

After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home. When darkness falls, the Wilsons discover the silhouette of four figures holding hands as they stand in the driveway. Us pits an endearing American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.

The film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Anna Diop, and Madison Curry.

Us opens in theaters on March 15, 2019.
