Brad Bird, the man who brought us a superhero family and a Parisian rat who can cook, along with Ethan Hunt scaling the world’s tallest building, is about to take on something very unexpected: a musical.
During an interview, Bird confirmed that he would reunite with his long-time music composing collaborator Michael Giacchino for an original live-action and animated hybrid musical. More on the report below.
Bird spoke to Variety during the BAFTA Tea Party in Los Angeles this past weekend. During that interview, the Incredibles 2 director talked a little bit about his next project. A live-action animation hybrid musical. While he wasn’t able to elaborate too much on this future project, he was able to say that there would be at least 20 minutes of animated sequences in the musical. The music would be composed by none other than his frequent collaborator and Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino. Additionally, he added that it would be an original project. Here’s the full quote:
“Well it’s a musical, actually. I don’t know anything about musicals so I figured I should do this, because I’m deathly afraid of it and it seems like a cool thing. It’s a project, I don’t want to say too much about it, I’ve been wanting to make for a long time, it’s got about 20 minutes of animation in it. It’s an original project, I assure you you don’t know.”
So as far as we know, Bird does not know anything about musicals but he is working with Giacchino on the music. However, as far as we know, Giacchino hasn’t done anything quite like this either. But he didn’t get to become one of the most sought-after composers in the industry for nothing. But it is unclear if Giacchino will be working on the score or if he will also be writing the musical numbers.
Furthermore, this will be an original film. The only thing that remotely resembles a live-action animation hybrid musical is Mary Poppins and its current sequel out in theaters now Mary Poppins Returns.
Still, anything that gives us a chance to see another collaboration between Bird and Giacchino could be great. After all, the two gave us The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, Incredibles 2, and the underrated Tomorrowland. So it should be exciting to see what they come up with here.
As always, we will keep you posted should any new developments come in.
