Oscars 2019: Producers Eyeing The Avengers To Help Save Hostless Academy Awards
  |  @   |

Oscar producers have found themselves to be a in a little bit of trouble this year. In December. Kevin Hart was hired to host. But when the comedian’s controversial jokes resurfaced, and it was apparent that he would not apologize for them, he stepped aside. Now with the show just weeks away from broadcast producers are considering going through the show without a host, but not before throwing one heck of a Hail Mary.

One option that’s looked likely is the Academy bringing in multiple A-list celebrities to introduce segments, and according to new report, the cast of the Avengers movies could be among those who show up to save the day. While this wont be like any other previous show, it may avoid a repeat of the 1989 cavalcade of comedy and musical skits. More on the report below.

Per THR the producers are considering bringing in a team of Marvel superheroes to add to the show, which makes sense considering the Oscars air on the Disney-owned ABC.

The team made their big debut back in 2012, when it was just Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Steve Rodgers aka Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bruce Banner aka The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Downey Jr., Evans, Ruffalo, Renner, and Jackson even found themselves giving an Academy Award in 2013.

However, the situation isn’t quite the same. And it will take more than just the founding members of the Avengers to host the event. Luckily, the team has grown quite a bit, despite the falling out Cap and Iron Man had in Captain America: Civil War. There’s a webslinging kid from Queens, a Wakandian Prince, a super-powered witch, a sentient android with a cosmic gem in his forehead, a guy in a bird suit, a war machine, the sorcerer supreme, an elite group of female warriors, and so many more. But then again, Thanos wiped out half of the roster, so we may find ourselves with six hosts.

Oscar producers wouldn’t comment as plans are still being worked out on how to make this all happen. But a lot of the Avengers cast was noticeably absent – with the exception of some Black Panther stars – during the Golden Globes. According to a few insiders, several Marvel stars were asked to pass on the Globes so they could make a greater impact at the Oscars.

If this plan works, it could benefit in multiple ways. For one thing, getting the cast of hugely popular films like the Avengers movies would definitely draw some of that younger viewership in, a demographic that Oscar producers have been trying so hard to get. Ratings have been on a very steady decline in past years, so such a move could help curb that problem. Additionally, the cast would be doing somewhat of a self-promotion for Avengers: Endgame, without actually having to produce a trailer or preview for it. Just having them on stage would remind us that the film is coming. Not that we need a reminder.

That being said, I hope they can pull it off. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The Oscars will be broadcast on ABC on February 24, 2019.
