Edgar Wright Reveals His Next Film Will Be A Psychological Horror-Thriller; Offers Update On ‘Baby Driver 2’

Edgar Wright will be shifting gears for his next feature film. Following the terrific Baby Driver, the filmmaker is now revealing that his next film will be a psychological horror-thriller that is in the same vein as Don’t Look Now and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion.

This film will be more of a straight up horror than a horror-comedy like Shaun of the Dead. It will also have a female lead. More on this and the status of Baby Driver 2, below.

Empire was the first to break the news. In their report, Wright tells them:

“I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.”

We’ve seen Wright blend in comedy through a variety of different genres in the past. Shaun of the Dead was a zombie flick. Hot Fuzz was a buddy cop action movie. And The World’s End was an alien invasion film involving some heavy drinking. Other Wright efforts includes Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Baby Driver. Almost all of them had some sort of comedic tinge to them. However, it looks like is upcoming untitled psychological horror-thriller will be a straight up horror. So it should be interesting to see what his new efforts will look like without all of his familiar vibes.

That being said, films like Don’t Look Now starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion starring Catherine Deneuve and Ian Hendry would be the best influences for a psychological horror-thriller as both dealt with some form of emotional torment.

As for Baby Driver 2, well don’t expect to see that any time soon. But know that it is coming as he confirms “a first draft of Baby Driver 2 exists.” He adds that the there will be a number of new characters that “takes the story further.” I suppose that’s what all sequels should do, but hey, I am excited that we get to see more of Miles (Ansel Elgort) and Debora (Lily James) heading West on the 20, in a car they can’t afford, with a plan they don’t have.

But hey, I am just tickled that we are getting a horror film directed by Wright. The film is expected to shoot this summer, so look forward to casting news and much more in the coming months.
