‘The Batman’ Director Matt Reeves Says Film Will Be A Noir Tale With A Rogues’ Gallery
  |  @   |

Batman may be known as “The World’s Greatest Detective,” but the cinematic iterations of the character have failed to live up to that moniker. However, The Batman director Matt Reeves wants to change all of that by giving us “a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale.”

Though this project has been in development for a long time, these new details prove that they are taking their time to shape the upcoming film into something worth waiting for. More on the report below.

In an interview with THR, Reeves spoke about what fans can expect to see from the still tentatively titled The Batman, which we now know will not see Ben Affleck reprising the role:

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Reeves also reveals that he is not working with any of the other directors who are working on DCEU titles:

“Warners believes they don’t have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it’s going to connect. What they need to try and do is make good movies with these characters.”

The DCEU version of Batman first appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Then played by Affleck, the character was much older and more cantankerous than previous iterations. However, this version was met with mixed reviews – I for one thought that was a solid approach that was brought down due to a bad script. And we didn’t get to see much of him given that he only appeared in Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. Affleck was sending mixed signals on whether or not he would return before the news that a new actor would be cast.

As far as characters we could see in The Batman, Reeves says we can expect to see a rogues’ gallery. This would follow up on the rumor that the film could be somewhat similar to that of “The Long Halloween” where Batman’s greatest villains teamed up to take on the vigilante:

“There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”

The Batman is now scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021.
