‘MacGruber’ May Find New Life As A TV Show
  |  @   |

Remember MacGruber, the SNL spinoff film starring Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe, and Maya Rudolph that was a huge flop at the box office but went on to become a cult classic? While there have been attempts to revive the film with a sequel, it looks like the comedy based on the satirical version of MacGyver may instead live on as a television series.

MacGruber director Jorma Taccone confirms that talks are happening, and it looks like everyone who was in the original film may be involved in the TV series. More on the report below.

Taccone spoke to The Daily Beast about the possibility of bringing MacGruber to television. During the interview, the filmmaker had this to say about who would be involved with this project:

“It’s everyone. Val was blown up pretty badly, he’ll have half a head. Everyone is so down. What’s nice is that, when you make something that had the heartbreak of not doing so well financially”¦ I would feel terrible if the people involved were embarrassed about it, but Ryan loves that shit, Kristen loves that shit, all the people involved are so psyched.

We’ve had so many ideas over the years, from the moment we stopped filming. I just love this character so much. We can expand the world now.”

It seems that a nine-year hiatus has given Taccone the time he needs to expand this world. Which will be interesting to see. He did manage to turn an SNL skit into a full-length feature. And while it wasn’t an immediate success, the film found a cult following, which then led to demands for a sequel. While very unlikely, a TV series could prove to be the consolation that fans will be happy with.

The original film was released back in 2010. Though it was made on a $10 million budget, the film went on to gross only $9.3 million at the box office. A disappointing result which factored into it not getting a sequel. But if a TV series does get greenlit, Taccone says it will most likely be an eight to 10 episode run. He then told the site, “I’m really hoping that when you print this there’s an announcement that it’s actually happening because I know nothing right now.”

Obviously, the violent and raunchy content doesn’t really allow for it to exist on broadcast TV. So that means it could exist on a streaming site like Netflix or Hulu. Although, that remains to be seen. Of course, we’ll keep you posted should anything on the MacGruber TV show come in. Which we hope is very soon.
