Howard The Duck

Although it has taken some time for Marvel Television to find success, they have done so by getting out of the MCU’s way and existing in their own space. Sure there may be some slight nods to the unseen cinematic characters they co-exist with, but for the most part, these shows are successful because they build their own brand. While Netflix has been quick to cancel some of their Marvel shows in the past, Hulu is in the process of developing their own shows just as quickly.

Various reports that are coming out of the winter TCAs are confirming that Marvel Television is developing animated shows based on Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Hit-Monkey. And they will be bringing in some very funny comedians to oversee these shows. From Kevin Smith and Chelsea Handler to Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum. More on the report below.

Deadline was among the first to report on the new deal between Hulu and Marvel Television. As part of this new deal, subscribers will be able to watch four new animated shows: Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Hit-Monkey. All of which will be exclusively available on Hulu. And much like The Defenders deal that existed on Netflix, the four shows will culminate to an ensemble special called: The Offenders. The site adds that a third season of Marvel’s The Runways seems very likely to happen at Hulu, as well.

Howard the Duck will be written and be executive produced by Kevin Smith and Dave Willis. Many of us may remember the character when he came to life in the titular film from George Lucas. However, he did find new-found fame when he appeared in a cameo scene during the end credits for the first Guardians of the Galaxy. He then reappeared in another cameo role, in the actual film, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Blum and Oswalt will be writing and executive producing M.O.D.O.K. aka Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing. A creation of the technological criminal organization known as AIM, M.O.D.O.K. can best be described as a highly intelligent villain with psionic powers whose head is so oversized that it makes everything else about him tiny. So think a giant’s head on a baby’s body.

Tigra & Dazzler Show will focus on the titular heroines who try to get their superpowered heads, hands, and hearts around life in the City of Angels. Chelsea Handler will write and act as executive producer.

Finally, Josh Gordon and Will Speck will be writing and executive producing Hit-Monkey, another strange and obscure Marvel title which centers on the titular Japanese snow monkey, who is aided by an American assassin, as he brings down the Tokyo underworld.

All of that will lead up to The Offenders, a special that brings the characters from these four shows together to fight a common threat. Not sure how that all works, but hey, if it didn’t work the first time, why not try again. And this time with a different streaming service.

Long time Marvel Entertainment producer Jeph Loeb will act as an executive producer on all five projects.
