‘Yesterday’ Trailer: What If The Beatles Didn’t Exist
  |  @   |

There isn’t any doubt that The Beatles are the source of inspiration for many music artists today. From “Hey Jude” to “Yesterday” and “Here Comes The Sun” to “Let It Be,” these are just only a few of the many hits the British band has earned throughout their career.

But Danny Boyle‘s latest film, Yesterday, written by Richard Curtis (Love Actually, About Time), asks the question: what if The Beatles didn’t exist, and you were the only person who knew about them and their songs? Would you use that knowledge responsibly or would you use it to gain fame and fortune. That is what we can expect to see in the upcoming music comedy that stars Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, and Ed Sheeran. Check out the trailer below.

I have to say, I was worried about the initial premise at first, but this looks so delightfully charming that I cannot resist the urge to watch it. Kinda like a die-hard Beatles fan who will stop at nothing to see the band. And with a plot like this, it is pretty easy to see where the film is going. But still, that doesn’t make it any less charming. Everyone around Patel’s character is absolutely captivated by his songwriting and music playing talent. It’s like no one has ever heard of these songs before. Of course he uses all of that to his advantage. Soon enough greedy music producers and “new friends” come chomping at the heels, while his real friends fall by the wayside as he is overwhelmed by this newfound fame.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers their songs. He’s about to become a very big deal. From Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire,Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Richard Curtis, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and Notting Hill, comes a rock-n-roll comedy about music, dreams, friendship, and the long and winding road that leads to the love of your life.

Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, BBC’s Eastenders) is a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed “¦ and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed.

Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, and with a little help from his steel-hearted American agent, Debra (Emmy winner Kate McKinnon), Jack’s fame explodes. But as his star rises, he risks losing Ellie “” the one person who always believed in him. With the door between his old life and his new closing, Jack will need to get back to where he once belonged and prove that all you need is love.

Yesterday opens on June 28, 2019.
