Academy Reverses Decision To Present 4 Awards During Commercial Breaks
  |  @   |

It’s amazing how much public outrage towards a bad decision can force an organization like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to reverse it. Last week, the Academy announced that it would present the awards for Cinematography, Editing, Make-Up and Hairstyling, and Live Action Short during commercial breaks instead of during the live broadcast as usual. It was something that did not sit well with anyone, especially those within those respective categories.

Now in a decision that will not surprise anyone, the Academy has decided to award the winners live during the Oscar telecast. More on the report here below.

Here’s what the Academy Board Of Governors told Deadline:

“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24.”

Though the branches had agreed to alternate the categories on a rotating basis, there were many who were opposed to that idea. A joint letter that was signed by filmmakers Alfonso Cuaron, Christopher Nolan, Michael Mann, Alejandro G. Inarritu, and Guillermo del Toro, as well as actors George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Banks, Peter Dinklage, and Kerry Washington showed how many disapproved of the idea.

Another letter backed by filmmakers such as Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino echoed their sentiments.

The Academy has been making an effort to cut down on the lengthy runtime that the annual awards show is known for. However, these attempts include having only two of the Best Original Songs performed on stage and awarding winners of the four categories during commercial breaks. Both ideas were immediately rejected. And rightfully so, the nominees have earned their right to perform or walk on stage to accept their respective awards.

Winners for the 91st Annual Academy Awards will be revealed on February 24, 2019. The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, CA, and broadcast live on ABC.
