Rumor: Obi-Wan Kenobi ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Series In Development For Disney+

Disney will have no trouble finding any TV series for their new streaming service Disney+. Along with Disney, Pixar, and Marvel titles, they also have access to Star Wars, which gives more people a reason to add yet another subscription to their bills. And with film production simmering down, there is the possibility that some titles that were being groomed for a theatrical release could be remodeled for a TV format.
Case in point, Obi-Wan Kenobi. A film centered around the character had been in development, and was rumored to be a part of the spinoffs that Disney and Lucasfilm would have released. However, in the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s under performance at the box office, it looks like the Jedi knight will find a new home. More on the report below.
StarWarsNewsNet is following up on a rumor that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking into making an Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series as opposed to making a film. According to their sources, the decision to do this comes after Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to meet box office expectations.
The news can be somewhat disappointing to those who were patiently waiting to see Obi-Wan once more on the big screen. After all, there had been rumors that it would have been the next spinoff following Solo. Even a surprise cameo from Darth Maul suggested that there could be another clash of lightsabers. Alas, it never came to be. That being said, it could live on in a TV format.
Another thing to consider is what we would have seen in the show. The site suggests that there will be six episodes in the series. So we can only surmise that a two-hour plus film would be increased to six one-hour long episodes. That would mean, if they were to use the former film as the basis of the show, that they would need to expand on some parts. Of course, this is all just speculation for now.
This is a rumor after all, but still, we can probably expect to hear more from this as soon as Star Wars Celebration comes around the corner. Maybe then we will hear more about the character and if he will be seen on TV or in a theater.
Disney+ currently has two Star Wars related shows in development. One is The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal as the title character who is “a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.” The series is the result of another one of the rumored spinoff films, which was going to focus on Boba Fett, being canceled.
The second is a Rogue One prequel with Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor.
