Taron Egerton and Elton John

The Elton John musical fantasy biopic Rocketman is set to hit theaters this May. Taron Egerton will play the iconic musician, whose music has garnered millions of fans around the world. And while we have seen his musical talents on display in only a few films and the two Rocketman trailers and one featurette, we have yet to get the full effect of his take on Elton John. Until now.

During Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party (the awards were held last night), both John and Egerton took to the stage to sing “Tiny Dancer,” and it made for not only an impressive performance, but something that should prove to everyone that the actor was the right person to portray the singer. Check out the video here below.

Here’s some details about the event:

During the auction Elton welcomed to the stage actor Taron Egerton, star of the upcoming motion picture film, ROCKETMAN; an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John. Following a short preview of the trailer and a trip to the London premiere on the block, the audience was taken by surprise when Taron suggested an off-the-cuff performance of ‘Tiny Dancer’, and Sir Elton John volunteering from the audience to accompany him on the piano. Guests were brought to their feet as they watched Elton John take his position on the keys while Taron belted out the lyrics to one of his most beloved ballads.

There’s no way that the great Elton John could ever be replaced. However, Egerton makes quite an impression hitting all the right notes singing alongside the artist he will portray in the upcoming film. But it’s not as though we haven’t seen the actor sing an Elton John song before. In fact, he did so in the animated musical Sing, where he voiced a gorilla gangster who could belt out “I’m Still Standing.”

While there’s still a lot left of the film to see, it looks like Egerton could be in the running for some awards talk, but it’s still too early to tell. And even then, the film will be released in May. But if you think about it, films like Get Out and Black Panther were both released in February and they still got some major nominations. So we will just have to wait and see if Rocketman can hold out that long.

But as for those singing talents, it is all Egerton. Director Dexter Fletcher praised the actor for having incredible range, while music producer said he was “so convincing” and that “his voice is incredible.”

Here is the very brief plot synopsis:

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard also star.

Written by Lee Hall (War Horse), Paramount has scheduled Rocketman for a May 31, 2019 release.
