Kevin Feige Talks ‘Eternals’ and How “Everything Will Be Different” After ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Marvel Eternals

Eternals is Marvel Studios’ next step into expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though they may not be the household names that Iron Man, Captain America, and Spider-Man are now, they’re still regarded as being a vital part of the larger Marvel Comics pantheon. The Rider director Chloe Zhao will helm the upcoming film that will likely use Jack Kirby‘s art from the comics. But there appears to be much more to it than that.

While on the Captain Marvel press tour, Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige talked a little bit about the upcoming project. More on what he said below.

Collider was able to obtain this latest bit of information in their exclusive interview with Feige. In it, he says that everything after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home will be “different and be unique,” but that “seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do.”

But part of that expansion means that the universe will have to introduce new characters to the MCU, and Feige says there are plans to introduce the Eternals much like how the Guardians of the Galaxy were introduced to us back in 2014:

“But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them. Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

It will be interesting to see what kind of tone we will see in the Eternals. Guardians of the Galaxy was a radical shift in tone for the MCU as it introduced audiences and fans to a hilarious space opera world. I am not overly familiar with the title, but an all-powerful force called the Celestials conducted experiments on early Earth humans, five million years ago. It was there that they created two divergent races: the long-lived Eternals, and the genetically unstable and monstrously grotesque Deviants.

Marvel Studios has yet to announce a release date for The Eternals.
