‘Dark Phoenix’ Trailer: The X-Men May Be Experiencing Some Déjà Vu
  |  @   |

Dark Phoenix may be the final X-Men film under the 20th Century Fox banner before it goes over to Disney. If that is the case, then they will be going out on their own terms. And it looks like director Simon Kinberg could end the franchise with a story arc that we have already seen before: “The Dark Phoenix Saga.”

In it, Jean Grey becomes possessed by a cosmic entity and kills nearly all of life in the process. With the X-Men trying to regain control of their friend, there are outside forces that seek to manipulate her. And now we are seeing more of that, and how the new villain (Jessica Chastain) will stop at nothing to use Jean’s (Sophie Turner) new powers for her own nefarious goals. Fox has released a new trailer for Dark Phoenix, and you can check it out below.

If you think you are experiencing déjà vu after watching the trailer, you most certainly are. The footage almost mirrors the events of what happened in X-Men: The Last Stand. But since the timeline has been altered due to the events in Days of Future Past, different key characters are dying. Of course, with changes to the timeline, there are some changes to these deaths. Different villains manipulating Jean. Etc.

Seeing this on a tiny phone probably doesn’t do the scale of the film any justice, obviously. There’s no doubt that some of the bigger moments in this would look very good on the big screen. That would be a huge accomplishment for Kinberg, who is making his directorial debut after spending time as a writer and producer on the franchise since The Last Stand.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The film also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Evan Peters.

Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on June 7, 2019.
