Edge Of Tomorrow Trailer Tom Cruise

An Edge Of Tomorrow sequel (or is it a prequel) is something that has been in the works for quite some time. And it seems fitting that we would be experiencing deja vu for a film that centered on that idea. Every time news on it comes up, it seems to be the same thing. But in this latest bit of news, it seems like Warner Bros. is preparing the project to take the next step.

According to new reports, the follow-up is heading towards active development, and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are expected to reprise their respective roles with director Doug Liman returning to the helm. More on the report here below.

Per THR, WB has brought in Matthew Robinson to develop the script. Robinson may not be a household name now, but he is one of the writers credited on Monster Trucks. He takes over Christopher McQuarrie’s place as the head screenwriter. McQuarrie, who is now directing two Mission: Impossible films, wrote the first Edge Of Tomorrow.

Details on what could be in the sequel are still not known. However, it would most likely be a follow-up and a prequel to the first Edge Of Tomorrow. In that film, directed by Doug Liman, PR military man Cage (Tom Cruise) finds himself stuck in a time loop and gets help from Rita (Emily Blunt), a fellow soldier who was stuck in a time loop, to get himself out of it.

Two years ago, Liman did talk about what we could see in the second Edge Of Tomorrow, saying that it would be both a sequel and a prequel:

“That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing””much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film””and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”

At the same time, the filmmaker said that he wasn’t a fan of doing sequels, but he has some “radical ideas” about doing one that would interest him:

“I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like “˜Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”

Though the first Edge Of Tomorrow wasn’t much of a commercial success, it was a hit with critics. Soon it would find a cult following, and calls for a sequel came pouring in. Of course, we will keep you updated as soon as more developments come in.
