Christopher Nolan’s New Film Will Be A Romantic Thriller Described As ‘North By Northwest’ Meets ‘Inception’

UPDATE: WB reps tell us that the details in the Production Weekly report are inaccurate. Therefore, the following report should be considered as a rumor and not fact.

One never knows what to expect from a Christopher Nolan film. But you can be sure it will be a carefully crafted piece that is both pleasing to the eye and meticulously put together. But his upcoming effort has been shrouded in mystery. All that we’ve known was that it was going to hit theaters in the summer of next year. Which will be only a few years after the release of his history pic Dunkirk.

Now there are a few details being revealed about the director’s upcoming feature. While they aren’t story specifics, the film is said to be a “romantic thriller” that is also described as North by Northwest meets Inception. More on the report below.

Production Weekly confirmed the tones and inspiration for the film and that Nolan would be re-teaming with Hoyte van Hoytema for a June shoot on their official Twitter account:

Hoytema is a frequent collaborator of Nolan’s. The two have been paired together for films such as Interstellar and Dunkirk. Now they are re-teaming for their third feature, which has yet to announce a title or reveal a cast. Considering that production will start later this year for a summer 2020 release, we are bound to hear of casting news soon.

As for North by Northwest, it is a film directed by the late great Alfred Hitchcock. In it, New York City ad executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) is pursued by ruthless spy Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) after Thornhill is mistaken for a government agent. Hunted relentlessly by Vandamm’s associates, the harried Thornhill ends up on a cross-country journey, meeting the beautiful and mysterious Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint) along the way. Soon Vandamm’s henchmen close in on Thornhill, resulting in a number of iconic action sequences.

But then there is the romance angle. Nolan’s characters have usually been surrounded by some form of tragedy. Whether it’s Batman’s suffering in the Dark Knight trilogy or Dom coming to terms with what he did in Inception, Nolan didn’t leave that much room for his characters to experience any romance.

So this is a bit of a nice change for the director. I’m genuinely interested to see how he tackles the genre while also staying true to his sense of directing style. We will just have to wait and see.

The untitled Christopher Nolan film will open in theaters on July 17, 2020.
