‘Booksmart’ Trailer: Olivia Wilde Makes One Hilariously Wicked Directorial Debut
  |  @   |

Annapurna Pictures has released the first trailer for Booksmart, a new comedy that marks Olivia Wilde‘s directorial debut. In it, Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird) and Kaitlyn Dever (Short Term 12) play a pair of best friends who make a promise to make a name for themselves in the last days of high school when they realize that after all the time and effort they have put in to prep for college, the same troublemaking kids are getting into those same colleges as well.

The film has already made its feature debut this month at SXSW, where it was met with rave reviews. Check out the trailer here below.

To say that this is a female version of Superbad would probably be a disservice to Wilde’s efforts as a director, and Feldstein and Dever’s performance. Still, I’m more than happy to get to see a comedy like this, no matter who the leads are. It’s just refreshing to see it from a female perspective. And one thing to note is Booksmart‘s authenticity, as it is a film that is not only directed by a woman, but it is also written by women. Emily Halpern (Trophy Wife), Sarah Haskins (Trophy Wife), Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me), and Kate Silberman (Set It Up) penned the script. Basically, it’s something where it’s not directed by a man using a script written by a woman, or a script by a man who used input from females.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Told from a wildly original, fresh and modern perspective, Booksmart is an unfiltered comedy about high school best friends and the bonds we create that last a lifetime. Capturing the spirit of our times, the film is a coming of age story for a new generation.

Booksmart also stars Jessica Williams with Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, and Jason Sudeikis.

Booksmart opens in theaters on May 24, 2019.
