SXSW 2019: Amazon’s ‘Good Omens’ Is Packed With ‘Doctor Who’ Easter Eggs

Bringing together creator/showrunner Neil Gaiman, seasoned British television director Douglas Mackinnon (Sherlock, Jekyll), and fan favorite actor David Tennant for Amazon Studio’s forthcoming TV series Good Omens not only means the show will impress, but also that it’ll be chock-full of references to Doctor Who.

Mackinnon, who directed each of the six total episodes of the upcoming miniseries, revealed the details this weekend during a Good Omens panel at this year’s SXSW that also featured Gaiman, Tennant, and stars Michael Sheen and Jon Hamm.

It’s also not very surprising. Mackinnon previously directed eight episodes of Doctor Who (such as Listen, Time Heist, and The Husbands of River Song — all of which were highly rated by Geeks of Doom’s TARDIS Blend podcast), including during seasons that Tennant served as the tenth Doctor. Gaiman has a deep love for all things timey-whimey and Time Lord, having written two excellent episodes of Doctor Who previously, with The Doctor’s Wife and Nightmare In Silver.

While the cast and crew didn’t reveal when in the series each of the Easter eggs appear or what they entail, they did disclose one pretty obvious reference to fourth Doctor actor Tom Baker’s ridiculously long scarf. There is one episode featuring character Newton Pulsifer (Jack Whitehall), who is wearing a tie similar to that iconic colorful scarf while driving to work.

Usually, cast and crew that appear on a panel ahead of a TV show premiere do have some chemistry, but everyone on stage at the panel had clearly bonded, which hopefully is translated on screen. And with no new Doctor Who episodes from the BBC until some time in 2020, I’ll gladly accept these tiny Whovian references embedded into (what is likely to be) a mega successful new series.

Amazon Prime Video will launch all six episodes of Good Omens on May 31, 2019.
