‘American Gods’ Season 3 Ordered By Starz
  |  @   |

For anyone who may have missed the news, it was confirmed going into this past weekend that Starz has officially ordered a season three for American Gods. The confirmation didn’t take long, as it came before the second episode of season two aired this past Sunday.

In addition to the new season order it’s also been announced that the third season of the show, which stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, and Emily Browning and is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s novel of the same name, will have a new showrunner.

Dark Angel co-creator and The Shield, Dexter, and The Walking Dead writer and executive producer Charles H. Eglee will be taking over showrunner duties for American Gods season three. This is the second time the showrunner has changed. Creators Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were the showrunners for season one before departing. They were replaced by Jesse Alexander for the currently airing second season.

Of the announcement, Starz president of programming Carmi Zlotnik said:

“Audiences continue to worship at the altar of American Gods and we are excited to be able to announce to all the true believers that there is more of this fantastical series to come. With Chic at the helm, the invaluable insight and contributions of Neil Gaiman and the undeniable talent of this dedicated cast and crew, we know that the show will continue to deliver on the vision and promise laid out in the novel.”

Executive producer Gaiman also released a statement, saying:

“I’m thrilled American Gods has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I’m getting to work on it with Chic Eglee.

Chic is the best partner-in-crime. We’ve been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I’m delighted that he gets to carry the American Gods torch on to glory. Thank you to Fremantle, Starz and Amazon for having faith in the series, to Bryan, Michael and Jesse for bringing it this far, to all the cast and crew, and most of all to the viewers. It’s their love of the characters that took us to this point, and will take us on to the next chapter.”

Gaiman himself recently got some experience as a showrunner, managing the upcoming Amazon Studios series Good Omens based on the novel he wrote with Terry Pratchett.

According to Deadline there’s a good chance more seasons of American Gods will be coming as well, as the series has always been planned for at least a five-season run. That of course will depend on enough viewers continuing to tune in going forward.

American Gods airs Sunday nights on Starz.
