Rumor: ‘Star Wars’ Movie From ‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators May Be Based On ‘The Old Republic’

Star Wars Old Republic

With a franchise as big and expansive as Star Wars, there are a number of things filmmakers could adapt that are outside of the Skywalker saga. And with the Skywalker saga coming to a close later this year in Episode IX, fans can look forward to other and possibly more exciting stories that go far beyond the conflicts between the Jedi and the Sith.

But there is also a lot of history to look back on, and that could be the basis of the film series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. According to new rumors, their trilogy could be based on The Old Republic, the popular MMORPG game which takes place some 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire was established. More on the report below.

Now, we have to stress that this is a rumor. But it is one that comes from the highly reputable Star Wars News Net, who also states that this is an unconfirmed rumor. According to the rumor, their source was:

“”¦approached about working on the next movie this Autumn. It is not the Rian Johnson trilogy, it is the Game of Thrones guys’ first movie, and it is set during the Old Republic, as Disney wants to open up the Star Wars timeline and appeal to a more “˜Game of Thrones”˜ style audience.”

The time period of Old Republic would be something that draws in that Game of Thrones fanbase. The idea of Jedi and Sith lightsabers clashing on the battlefield in a grand battle is something that we haven’t seen much of. And apparently, they want to model that after another popular franchise that is based on a similar timeline:

“So the timeline is hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.”

Interesting. So if any of this is true — and again, this is a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt — filming is expected to begin later this year:

“Filming starts in the Fall and art departments are in design phases now as the script is being finalized. That is all I know but I am 95% confident that this is accurate.”

So even if Benioff and Weiss’s film isn’t inspired by The Old Republic, it looks like production on their Star Wars film could begin later this fall.

As for The Old Republic, well, per Wikipedia:

This story takes place in the Star Wars fictional universe shortly after the establishment of a tenuous peace between the re-emergent Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic,300 years after the events of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games, and more than 3,600 years before the events in the Star Wars films.

So there appears to be enough of a gap between The Old Republic and the Skywalker saga that anything we would see in the rumored film wouldn’t do any reputable damage to the Star Wars canon. Of course, maybe the film could be something new entirely and set forth the basis for a new storyline. We will just have to wait and see.
