Once upon a time, there were big, big plans for an adaptation of Stephen King‘s book series The Dark Tower. A trilogy of movies, joined by two seasons of an accompanying television series. But sometimes things don’t quite work out how they were planned.
We did eventually get a movie, but it fared poorly at the box office and even worse with critics. But the good news for fans of the books is that there is still a TV series in the works. The two just aren’t tied together anymore. The series is set up at Amazon, and now it appears that they have found their Gunslinger and Man in Black.
Though Amazon hasn’t announced anything officially and denied to comment, it’s being reported that Sam Strike and Jasper Pääkkönen have been cast in the series. According to the report Strike will play the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain; while Pääkkönen will play his adversary the Man in Black, who is also goes by Randall Flagg and other names. Idris Elba played the Gunslinger in the 2017 movie adaptation, with Matthew McConaughey playing the Man in Black.
Handling showrunner duties on the series is Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), who had this to say about The Dark Tower speaking to The Hollywood Reporter back in 2017:
“I’ve been a Stephen King fan for decades, and the opportunity to adapt The Dark Tower as a TV series is a great honor. The events of The Gunslinger, Wizard and Glass, The Wind Through the Keyhole and other tales need a long format to capture the complexity of Roland’s coming of age “” how he became the Gunslinger, how Walter became the Man in Black, and how their rivalry cost Roland everything and everyone he ever loved. I could not be more excited to tell this story.”
Strike’s credits include EastEnders, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface, the short-lived adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers on SYFY, and David Fincher’s Mindhunters. He also has a role in Chernobyl, an upcoming HBO miniseries.
Pääkkönen recently starred in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, and will star in Lee’s next project Da 5 Bloods as well. He also had a role on the TV series Vikings alongside Katheryn Winnick, who starred in the movie take on The Dark Tower as Laurie.
The report says that now that the two leads have been cast, an official pilot order could soon follow.
