Apple TV Plus

Apple has unveiled Apple TV+, their very own subscription-based streaming service. This is a huge moment for the tech giant, which will now be entering the ring with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu to deliver original content from some of the best storytellers. Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan, Ron Howard, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Sofia Coppola, Reese Witherspoon, Hailee Steinfeld, and Damien Chazelle are among those who already have titles on the way which will be available exclusively on Apple TV+.

Though a lot of the details on what we could see are still limited, a pair of preview videos show us what to expect from the streaming service. Check out the videos below.

The filmmakers video is something that you might see coming out of an Apple event. It’s a bit dramatic but it’s got a story to tell. And here, we get to see that story be told as Spielberg explains how he would open a film. From there, directors like Coppola, Shyamalan, and Howard give some of their insight on what storytelling is and how they approach it.

Montages of production and set shots are shown to give that drama more heft to it. The soaring music only adds to it. Though don’t expect to see much of anything in regard to the titles they are working on in this particular video as it is only meant to show the level of dedication they have to their craft.

The trailer for the original content is a small glimpse of what we will see in See, a sci-fi drama starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard; The Morning Show, a workplace drama, starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell, that will explore the complex relationship of men and women in the workplace; Kumail Nanjiani’s Little America, a docuseries featuring the stories of immigrants or children of immigrants as told by them; Little Voices from J.J. Abrams and singer Sara Bareilles, which is described as a funny romantic show about a musician who is struggling to form her identity through music and as a human; and Oprah Winfrey will have Toxic Labor, a docuseries that will explore the toxicity within the workplace and how those view it and what is being done to change it.

Other shows include Dear…, For All Mankind, See, Home Before Dark, Dickson, Truth Be Told, Servant, Amazing Stories, and Mythic Quests. And that is just only scratching the surface. It didn’t even include shows that will be coming from Chazelle or Spencer. Though the video provides a lot of teaser moments, it closes with a scene from See with Jason Momoa saying “This is where we build our new home.” That’s quite a statement. And considering that Apple has poured billions of dollars into this, it could be the new home for many other shows.

And let’s not forget about a new iteration of Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits that will be written and directed by Taika Waititi, or the spy drama that’ll star Brie Larson, or the untitled comedy from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia creators Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day.

But there are some bigger questions that need to be answered. One of the biggest ones is how much it will all cost. Clearly, all of this content wasn’t cheap. And the biggest criticism to come out of this was that the event didn’t even address the price to access all of this content. This was merely to show off what Apple has been working on for the past two years.

Additionally, it will be interesting to see how Apple TV+ will compete against some of the other streaming giants like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and pretty soon Disney+, and other streaming services that will come from major studios.

Finally, how does one access this content? With Apple in the name, it seems pretty obvious that you have to have an account that is linked to Apple. But does one have to have an Apple TV to watch these shows or can it be accessed through a MacBook and iPhone?

For this very showy presentation, there are a lot more questions than answers. And we will get answers to those questions eventually.

Apple TV+ is set to launch this fall.
