‘The Suicide Squad’ Brings Back Jai Courtney As Captain Boomerang

Captain Boomerang

Before James Gunn can sail through space with the Guardians of the Galaxy for the third time, he’s going to be directing a different kind of misfits in the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad. And though the film is being considered a reboot, with actors like the departing Will Smith being replaced by Idris Elba as Deadshot and other actors like Margot Robbie being rumored to return, it looks like the filmmaker will be mixing in some memorable rogues with very obscure criminals.

According to new reports, Jai Courtney is said be coming back to play as Captain Boomerang. At least that’s what he’s telling us. Find out what he had to say about his “return” below.

Courtney spoke to Business Insider about The Suicide Squad. Although he didn’t have much to say, he did indicate that he will be returning:

“We’re getting ready to shoot in a few months’ time. There’s not much else I can reveal about it but yet, you’ll be seeing Boomerang back for sure. I’m happy, it’s going to be fun. It will be different, for sure, but it’s going to be great.”

It’s unclear what Courtney meant by different. Obviously, with Gunn at the helm, there will be a different vibe. However, the original Suicide Squad could easily be seen as Warner Bros.’ version of Guardians of the Galaxy. A ragtag group of misfits who don’t play well with others on a mission to rescue the world, with pop chart hits being used to drive the story. Although, that film didn’t do nearly as well as Guardians, it left enough of an impression as Robbie is coming back in Birds of Prey.

Had everything worked out schedule-wise, Smith would have been back to play Deadshot. However, because of those scheduling conflicts, Gunn went to Elba. Previous reports say that the two hit it off pretty well. Additionally, they are both familiar with working in a superhero film.

So it appears that Courtney will be one of the few who is actually returning. It should be interesting to see how he will interact with the group now considering that there are a few changes to the roster. Which, again, will be different as villains like King Shark, Ratcatcher, and Polka-Dot Man will have a role in the reboot. It’s unclear what the size of that role is or if they will have their heads blown off early on, which forces the group to comply with the rules. Or maybe they will just die early on.

Production for The Suicide Squad is scheduled to begin later this summer and is expected to open in theaters on August 6, 2021.
