‘The Suicide Squad’: Viola Davis Returning; Idris Elba Not Playing Deadshot
  |  @   |

The fact that we are getting James Gunn films from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU is a gift. After the director was fired by Disney on their third Guardian of the Galaxy film – but before he was subsequently reinstated – Gunn was brought in to write and direct The Suicide Squad. The new film, which was considered to be a soft reboot at the time, is not loosely using the term, as characters and actors from David Ayer‘s original film are returning. Jai Courtney will be back to play Captain Boomerang, and now Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller.

However, Idris Elba, who was tapped to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, is no longer being considered for the role of the assassin with deadly accuracy. More on the report here below.

Variety was the first to report on the news of Elba’s mysterious new character. While they could not provide any details on who it could be – let the speculation games begin – they say the decision was made in part because the studio did not want to disrespect what Smith had done to bring the character to life in 2016’s Suicide Squad. There is also the idea that Smith may return to reprise the role as Deadshot somewhere along the line. However, it is beginning to look like Waller won’t need his services in The Suicide Squad.

Speaking of Waller, Davis will reprise her role as the ruthless government operative who oversees Task Force X. She was the one to assemble the group of convicts to go on covert black ops missions in exchange for a reduced sentence. However, should they try to escape or disobey any orders, they will be killed after the tiny micro-explosive that is implanted in the back of their heads is triggered.

Now, The Suicide Squad was being pitched as a soft reboot, which would feature an entirely new group of convicts like Ratcatcher, PolkaDot Man, Peacemaker, and King Shark. But key characters like Waller and Captain Boomerang are coming back. Additionally, there are rumors that Margot Robbie could reprise her role as Harley Quinn. But with Deadshot out of the picture, it remains to be seen what this new lineup will look like. Deadshot is a key figure in the Suicide Squad. Of the many iterations that have visited in both comics and animated series, Deadshot, Harley, and Captain Boomerang have had the most appearances. And based on some of the previous reports, it comes as no surprise that Gunn is using some obscure characters.

Gunn writes and directs The Suicide Squad, which hits theaters on August 6, 2021.
