‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is Pure Box Office Gold, But Can It Pass ‘Avatar’

Disney released a tiny movie some of you may have heard about over the weekend. It’s called Avengers: Endgame. After 11 years and 21 films, it has come down to this one movie that simply smashed box office records. Having seen it four times already, I can tell you that it is one of the best movie-going experiences I have had in a very long time. Watching the press screening is one thing, but watching it with the general public is something else.
And it shows, as Avengers: Endgame was not only the number one film this weekend, taking in $350 million domestically, but also smashed a few other records in the process such as the biggest opening day and weekend, which were previously held by films like The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War. But now the question is, can it pass Avatar? More on this report below.
Box Office Mojo says Avengers: Endgame opened to the tune of $350 million in North America and $859 million overseas, for a total of $1.2 billion worldwide. The phenomenon that has captured the world by storm was able to break an unbelievable amount of records this past weekend, including single-day openings for Friday ($156.7 million), Saturday ($109 million), and Sunday ($84.3 million). It was also the fastest film to reach key milestones like the fastest to $350 million, a record that was previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took five days in total to reach that milestone.
Now comes the question of whether or not Avengers: Endgame can pass Avatar‘s $2.7 billion for the worldwide box office gross. It certainly will be a challenge considering that Endgame will have some very stiff competition since it opened during the summer movie season. This means that the film will have to get through Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and even Disney films like Aladdin, Toy Story 4, and Dark Phoenix. Whereas Avatar opened during the winter break and walked into the new year with hardly any competition.
But maybe it is not all about that. Maybe it is about giving the fans what they want. And Endgame proves that Marvel Studios knows how to deliver that to the fans.
In a statement, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feig said:
“From the very beginning with Iron Man, all we’ve wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life onscreen the way we’ve experienced them as fans of the comics.”
Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo also released a statement, saying:
“We poured our heart and soul into Avengers: Endgame, hoping to tell a story that would inspire audiences around the world. Our family of cast and crew felt honored to be entrusted with bringing the Infinity Saga to a close. To Kevin Feige, everyone at Disney and Marvel, and the incredible, global community of fans “” thank you.”
