‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Director Jon Watts Says The Multiverse Will Play A Huge Role In Spidey’s Newest Film

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home is the final chapter of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will see the Webslinger dealing with the fallout of Avengers: Endgame. Many of the founding Avengers have moved on one way or another, with some of them passing on the mantle and title to other heroes. And based on the latest trailer, Spidey will be one of those heroes. And before he can take on those responsibilities, he will be going on a European vacation.

Which is abruptly interrupted when Spidey (Tom Holland) is recruited by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to join Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), who just so happens to be from another universe. Together, they must deal with a new elemental threat that comes from Beck’s Earth. While many believed that Beck was using his Mysterio persona and knack for using Hollywood special effects, as well as smoke and mirrors, to pull off his crimes, director Jon Watts seems to hint that Beck isn’t the same person that we know him to be. Check out what he had to say below.

In an interview with Fandango, Watts talks about how Far From Home opens the door to the multiverse, and how they will use the events of Endgame to address the idea of other universes:

“Well, I mean, yeah. We had to look at it in terms of the scope of what happened at the end of Endgame. Seeing all the crazy things that they did and all the questions that raises. So we’re definitely trying to answer one of the big ones — alternate timelines. So many possibilities opened up at the end of Endgame, and Peter Parker is one of the few people on the ground dealing with them.”

And it seems that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on the multiverse will differ from the one we saw in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. While Watts wouldn’t explain how it differs, he says Nick Fury would be doing the explaining. And we heard a bit of that in the last trailer when Fury says Beck was from another Earth. So when these elemental threats arrive, they are a product of the Thanos snap. Here’s what Watts had to say about Beck and these new elemental threats:

“In the film, it’s similar to the trailer, he is introduced as a potential ally to fight off this elemental threat.”

Furthermore, Watts says that Beck and the elemental creatures are from the same parallel dimension.

In terms of when Spider-Man: Far From Home takes place, Watts wouldn’t say specifically, but said that it would take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame:

“We don’t say specifically how far after, but the idea is that it’s almost immediately after the events of Endgame. So we get to see the neighborhood from the first movie dealing with the implications of all of the crazy fallout of Endgame. And, you know, in classic New York style, everyone is just moving on and getting on with their daily lives. Ya know, half the people that disappeared are now back, so let’s move on.”

Part of those implications and repercussions Peter and his friends have dealt with for the better part of five years. And it will also explore the fallout of Avengers: Endgame. According to Watts, that was “one of the fun things that we get to play with.”

But as epic as Avengers: Endgame was, Far From Home will bring the MCU back down to a more grounded level and will see Parker handling daily life things that teenagers will have to encounter, like going to the DMV.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 2, 2019.
