James Cameron Congratulates Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Endgame’ For Passing ‘Titanic’s Box Office Record

Titanic

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame has broken all sorts of box office records having grossed over $2.2 billion in the 13 days since it was released. So many that it has surpassed James Cameron‘s Titanic ($2.1 billion worldwide).

While Cameron has gone on record about how superhero movies are played out, the director displayed a very gracious gesture by congratulating Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on accomplishing this rare achievement. Check out the tweet that Cameron sent out below.

And for those who cannot read the embed, here’s what he had to say.

To Kevin and Everybody at Marvel,

An iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took The Avengers to sink my Titanic. Everyone here at Lightstorm Entertainment salutes your amazing achievement. You’ve shown that the movie industry is not only alive and well, it’s bigger than ever!

Jim Cameron

There have been many films that have come close to passing Titanic‘s numbers, but none have ever accomplished the task. Since 1997, Titanic was one of the two highest grossing films, only to be outshined by Cameron’s Avatar 12 years later. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War were just $100 million shy of doing that, but neither one of them had the numbers to surpass it. So it has taken 22 years for another film to come along and pass Titanic.

Even though Cameron displayed this act of respect, he knows that Avatar is still the top film worldwide ($2.7 billion). While there is a chance that Endgame could out gross it, we have to remember that the summer movie season is a very competitive market, making the chances of that happening smaller.

Still, to hold on to the second highest grossing film for the past 10 years is an accomplishment in and of itself. Very few can say that they have made $2 billion dollar films. Yet Cameron, J.J. Abrams, and the Russo brothers have.
