‘Abominable’ Trailer: DreamWorks Has One Giant Yeti Rescue Plan
  |  @   |

Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have released the first trailer for the new animated feature Abominable.

Described as an epic 2,000-mile adventure from the streets of Shanghai to the breathtaking Himalayan snowscapes, the film features a large Asian ensemble cast that includes the voice talents of Chloe Bennet (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) and Albert Tsai (Shazam!). Check out the trailer and a poster below.

DreamWorks’ latest animated film also features the voice talents of Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, Tsai Chin, and Michelle Wong.

The large Asian voice cast speaks to the authenticity the film is trying to reflect upon. Additionally, DreamWorks and Universal worked with Shanghai-based Pearl Studio to make sure that the film’s Shanghai settings are true.

Speaking to EW, director Jill Culton said:

“It’s just about getting to that authentic place. Just as an example, we set-dressed the entire city, and then we got the feedback that there are no metal trash cans in China. So we had to go back through every scene and change the trash cans to rubber.”

This looks like your pretty standard animated film that encourages its young target audience to find their identity. And sometimes that search takes you on an adventure. The incredibly adorable Yei should be a huge draw for audiences, and it’s great to see and hear more diverse voices in films like this.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio’s co-production Abominable takes audiences on an epic 2,000-mile adventure from the streets of Shanghai to the breathtaking Himalayan snowscapes.

When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth.

But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home.

Abominable is written and directed by Culton (Open Season, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 2) and co-directed by Todd Wilderman (Trolls, The Croods). It’s produced by Suzanne Buirgy (Kung Fu Panda 2, Home) and Peilin Chou of Pearl Studio. The film is executive produced by Tim Johnson (Over the Hedge, Home, ANTZ), Frank Zhu (Checked In, Lotus Code), and Li Ruigang (Kung Fu Panda 3, The Taking of Tiger Mountain).

Abominable will be released by Universal Pictures worldwide beginning September 27, 2019. In China, the film will be distributed by Pearl.
