It’s been a hell of a year for horror fans, especially for those who have fond memories of watching Joe Bob Briggs hosting MonsterVision and Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater in the ’90s. That’s because Shudder brought him back for one last hurrah, a 24-hour horror marathon last summer. But fate had different plans. The marathon was hugely popular, and not only crashed the streaming service but also created its own little monster in the process. Its success led to a pair of holiday specials, “The Dinners of Death” for Thanksgiving and “A Very Joe Bob Christmas.”
Continuing to grow stronger from his resurrection popularity, Joe Bob was eventually given a brand new weekly series called The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. For the past eight weeks, fans have gathered to enjoy a new double feature each Friday night. But with the ninth and final episode set to air tomorrow night, those same fans have been left wondering if there would be any more to look forward to. And thankfully, we finally have an answer to that question as Shudder has given the series a second season.
Screen Rant shared the news exclusively, including this quote from Joe Bob:
“It hasn’t even been a full year since the 24-hour Last Drive-In marathon, but since then I’ve made thousands of new friends and reconnected with thousands of old ones. The main reason I’m coming back to do another season is that this community of horror fans is greater than the sum of its parts, and it’s about something larger than horror. Don’t ask me what that thing is, but it’s a source of great joy to me.”
Back when a trailer was released for The Last Drive-In series, I mentioned how I hoped the popularity would stay strong enough to lead to another 24-hour marathon, a couple more holiday specials, and finally another season to mirror this past 10 months or so.
Well, no word yet on a part two for the 24-hour summer marathon or more holiday specials, but at least we know the series will be back for another run of double features sometime in the future.
If you’re a horror fan and still haven’t subscribed to Shudder, be sure to head to the bottom of this post for a special offer to celebrate the season two greenlight.
Mr. JB had some tech difficulties trying to post this, so here’s the full “Director’s Cut” of his official #TheLastDriveIn announcement. (This is why he needs his Mail Grrrl…😉)
