Pixar’s Onward isn’t the only film that they are releasing in 2020. The animation studio also had something locked in for June of 2020, and today is the first time that we are hearing of the official title.
It’s been revealed that Pixar’s second 2020 release will be titled Soul, and it comes from the two-time Academy Award winning director of Up and Inside Out, Pete Docter. Additionally, the film is said to take place “from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms.” More on the report below.
The announcement was made through various official social media outlets. Their Instagram post, which can be found below, included the description and release date:
“One year from today, Pixar Animation Studios will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions. Disney & Pixar’s “Soul” arrives in theaters on June 19, 2020.”
Deadline also offered another brief description of the film:
“Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you”¦ YOU?”
It almost aligns with how Inside Out alternated its settings from the real world to inside the head of a young girl. Although, it remains to be seen if Soul‘s storytelling takes a similar approach. The title’s use of the blue and orange as contrasting colors could speak to that dichotomy of how the film has two different settings. But one thing is for sure, it continues Pixar’s tradition of telling human stories through fantastic characters. But there is still a lot of unanswered questions like who will be voicing these characters.
Soul will be Docter’s first major directorial effort since he assumed the role Chief Creative Officer over at Pixar last year.
