Jumanji The Next Level

2017’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was the surprise hit no one expected. Through its good nature, charms, and family-friendliness, it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of that year. As such, it deserved a sequel. Given that the original started off as a board game, which then went to a video game, it would be interesting to see where Jumanji: The Next Level could go. But it looks like director Jake Kasdan and writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have cracked the code.

Because in this new installment, those teenagers would be returning to the world of a digital Jumanji once more. But in a new twist, they are bringing some geriatric support, along with a few twists that change the characters from the first once more. Check out the trailer here below.

Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain, and Morgan Turner all return to play their respective roles. The only thing is, Spencer (Wolff) has gone missing in the game, and it is up to Bethany (Iseman), Anthony (Blain), and Martha (Turner) to return to the game to help find him and bring him back home. The only problem is, not only are they entering the game not as their respective avatars, but they have brought some old-time hitchhikers with them. Danny Devito and Danny Glover have also entered the game, but as Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) and Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart), avatars that were played by Spencer and Anthony in the first. While Martha keeps her Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) character, Anthony is now Professor Sheldon Oberon (Jack Black), who was formally played by Bethany in the first.

So it should be fun to see how much this changes the dynamic between the group. One thing that seems to be kept, even though they are being played by different people, is the back-and-forth banter between Johnson and Hart. If anything, them mirroring DeVito and Glover makes the film even funnier. By having these switches, the sequel can stay fresh and be unpredictable because now these characters are playing different avatars which would give way to unexpected results.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

Nick Jonas, Rhys Darby, and Awkwafina also star.

Jumanji: The Next Level opens on December 13, 2019.
