Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren Return In ‘Fast And Furious 9’

When it comes to casting news for the The Fast and The Furious franchise, don’t expect to hear any reports from the trades. Usually, this information comes right from the stars of the film themselves. Like Vin Diesel, who has been there for almost the entire franchise. The actor took to social media today to announce that Oscar-winning actresses Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will be back to reprise their roles. More on the report here below.

Here’s what he said on his official Instagram account:

“We’ve got a lot of the original cast here, including Oscar winners like Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren,” Diesel said.

The two are relatively new to the franchise. In fact, both appeared in Fate Of The Furious, with Theron’s Ciper forcing Toretto to do her bidding or else she would kill his son. Mirren plays Magdalene Shaw, the mother of Deckard (Luke Owens) and Owen Shaw (Jason Statham), the two also returned to reprise their roles to support Toretto to escape from Ciper’s grasp.

Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Nathalie Emmanuel are also returning, with John Cena being the latest addition to the cast.

Justin Lin also returns to the director’s chair after taking a short hiatus. He made his The Fast and The Furious debut with The Fast and The Furious 3: Tokyo Drift. After that, he directed Fast And Furious, Fast Five, and Fast and Furious 6. James Wan and F. Gary Gray would then direct the following installments, Furious 7 and The Fate Of The Furious, respectively.

However, very little is known about what Fast and Furious 9 would be about. Judging by the events of The Fate Of The Furious, Ciper might want to get her revenge on Dom, and the Shaw matriarch might play a bigger role than before. Of course, everyone wants Han to come back. After all, if Deckard can survive his injuries, so can Han. And this is the Fast and Furious franchise: these characters can’t really die, no matter how crazy or absurd they met their fate.

Fast and Furious 9 is currently in production. Universal has scheduled the sequel for a May 22, 2020 release.
