Disney’s Mulan remains one of their best animated features during their renaissance. Based on a Chinese folktale, the animated film followed a young female who disguised herself as a male soldier in order to join the army so that her ailing father would not have to go.
Now with Disney turning their animated classics into live-action films, it was only a matter of time before they looked to Mulan.
Directed by Niki Caro, the live-action version stars Yifei Liu as the title star who will defend the honor of her family and become one of the most noble soldiers in the Chinese army. Check out the trailer here below.
If there was any animated film that deserved a live-action treatment, it’s Mulan. Let’s be honest, not all of them are runaway hits. While Dumbo could not reach key milestones, Aladdin was an unexpected hit by being a huge box office success.
However, most of these reimaginings are just nostalgic fodder, with only a few things added to make it more contemporary and fresh. So it will be interesting to see how Disney will do that with Mulan. The trailer hits the title character’s key notes with her being the obedient daughter who will bring honor to her family by honoring traditions and showing how courage and fearlessness she can be as she steps into the battlefield.
But one of the major differences the live-action Mulan will have from its animated counterpart is the lack of songs. But that shouldn’t be of great concern considering the animated one only had two memorable songs.
Also Disney wisely chose not move forward with an early draft where a European male defending China falls in love with Mulan.
