Fox 2000’s Elizabeth Gabler Signs Deal With Sony Pictures

One of the first tragedies of the Disney-Fox merger was the dissolution of Fox’s smaller branch Fox 2000. That branch produced films like Hidden Figures and Life of Pi.

It was thought that everyone at Fox 2000 would be out of a job. But a new report says another studio will be saving it. Sony will be hiring Elizabeth Gabler, former head of the now defunct Fox 2000, and her team to do film and TV adaptations of smaller films based on inspirational stories. More on the report below.

Variety says that Gabler will be joining Sony Pictures in an “innovative media deal,” and through this deal she will be executive producing both film and television titles based on HarperCollins books.

The production company, which has yet to be named, will be working at Sony’s studio lot located in Culver City, California.

Gabler released a statement for the announcement, saying:

“For the past two decades our division has thrived by building a film slate based principally on adaptations of literary properties, both fiction and non-fiction. We have always felt that HarperCollins is part of our family and it is now an honor and a privilege to create a true partnership with Brian Murray and his amazing global team. The only person I know who could have made this a reality with Brian is my mentor, friend, and inspiration, Tom Rothman, and my team and I are deeply grateful for the opportunity to become part of the powerhouse that is Sony Pictures Entertainment.”

And it looks like this was a deal that was destined to happen. In that same report, it was mentioned that Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chief Tom Rothman had been trying to bring Gabler into the Sony family. He called Gabler and HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray “the gold standard at their respective jobs.”

While Fox 2000 was a smaller branch of the larger 20th Century Fox, it produced films like Hidden Figures, The Devil Wears Prada, Life of Pi, The Fault in Our Stars, The Hate U Give, and Love, Simon. Nearly all of the titles released are based on literary novels, and most were modest hits.

While Fox 2000 is shut down, Disney will be releasing some of the remaining titles under the production company such as The Woman in the Window starring Amy Adams and Gary Oldman, the Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass project News of the World, and The Art of Racing in the Rain starring Milo Ventimiglia, Kevin Costner, and Amanda Seyfried.
