Taika Waititi Returns To Direct ‘Thor 4’; Warner Bros. Puts Live-Action ‘Akira’ On Hold

Thor: Ragnarok Waititi Chris Hemsworth

Korg is going to need a lot pamphlets for this one, that’s for sure. Taika Waititi, the man behind Thor: Ragnarok, will be back to direct Thor 4.

However, this puts Akira, another film Waititi was tapped to direct, on hold. More on the report below.

THR says Waititi will write and direct the fourth installment in the Thor franchise. It is unclear what the film will actually be about considering the events which have unfolded in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One thing is for sure, Waititi’s return means that we are in for yet another humorous take on the title character, which has been somewhat of a weaker character in the entire MCU.

Waititi’s return also means he is the only director of these standalone films to ever return. The first Thor was directed by Kenneth Branagh, with Thor: The Dark World being helmed by Alan Taylor. Directors who have returned for other films include Jon Favreau for the Iron Man films, the Russo Brothers for the final two Captain America and the final two Avengers films, Joss Whedon for the first two Avengers, James Gunn for all three Guardians of the Galaxy films including the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Ryan Coogler and Scott Derrickson for the upcoming Black Panther 2 and Doctor Strange 2, respectively.

Thor 4 also marks the first time that there has been an actual fourth film for a standalone hero. Iron Man and Captain America got trilogies. So could Thor 4 be a proper capper or will it be more of an epilogue in the same way Toy Story 4 was one? We will just have to wait and see.

Unfortunately, it is not all good news. Well, at least not for Warner Bros.’ Akira. In the same report, THR says the adaptation has been put on hold indefinitely. Waititi, the latest of many directors attached to the adaptation over the years, had been in the midst of casting for the long-gestating project. According to the report the film has been once again put on hold because the project’s production was planned for around the same time as the new Thor sequel, and there were also still issues with the script to work out.

It’s unclear what WB’s next move will be for Akira, but it is clear that they want to have Waititi direct the film as they are hoping he will direct it right after he finishes Thor 4.

While Waititi is best known for films like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople he received global recognition for his work on Thor: Ragnarok, which is arguably the best in the franchise so far. Now it remains to be seen if he can outdo himself in the fourth installment.

You can see his next feature, Jojo Rabbit later this fall.
