Paramount showed their latest blockbuster slate at San Diego Comic-Con today. While their time was reserved for Terminator: Dark Fate – and we will have much more on that later – Tom Cruise made a very surprising appearance to show the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick. Check it out below.
No official plot synopsis was released, but based on the trailer alone, you should get a slight idea of what has happened to Maverick since the events of the first Top Gun. Judging by Ed Harris‘s assessment, not very much. For all of the accolades he has collected in 34 years, Maverick has not surpassed the rank of Captain. He won’t retire. Harris adds “Despite your best efforts, you refuse to die.” And then he follows that up with a question “Why is that?”
To which an aged and dogged Maverick replies, “It’s one of life’s mysteries.”
From there, we get to see gleaming shots of military and air force bases, with close up shots of engines firing up and Maverick being pulled back by G-forces. Additionally, we get to see some familiar scenes, especially when Maverick hops on his motorcycle to race a fighter jet taking flight.
And before you question if many of the shots depicted in the trailer are for real, let’s not forget how Cruise has put his own life on the line by performing his own stunts in the Mission: Impossible trailers. And he assured attendees that everything they saw is for real.
While Cruise’s career playing in the face of danger is still safe, his character’s career may be headed towards an end.
“The end is inevitable Maverick,” Harris’s character warns. “Your kind is headed towards extinction.”
To which Maverick replies, “Maybe so, sir. But not today.”
Top Gun: Maverick also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Lewis Pullman.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy), Top Gun: Maverick heads into theaters on June 26, 2020.
