SDCC 2019: Comic-Con Trailer For HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ Series Doesn’t Do Lollipops and Rainbows

HBO has just unveiled a new trailer for Damon Lindelof‘s vision for a Watchmen series. You can find the first trailer here as well, if you missed it.

The series is based on the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic of the same name. But unlike a traditional adaptation, the series will take a look at the world created as a result of Adrian Veidt’s (Jeremy Irons) plans. Check out the full trailer below.

While Lindelof has gone on record saying that the series won’t be an adaptation or a sequel to the original story, it will depict a new, original story that does take place after the original Watchmen. As strange as that sounds, we will have to wait and see what exactly that means. At least we know that “Doctor Manhattan lives on fucking Mars.” Cue the David Bowie song. And that could prove to be a very important key to this series.

And Doctor Manhattan isn’t the only Easter egg to be dropped. There are also pirate flags, a masked group of vigilantes wearing Rorschach masks, and, of course, Veidt.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Watchmen takes place in an alternative, contemporary reality in the United States, in which masked vigilantes became outlawed due to their violent methods. Despite this, some gather around in order to start a revolution while others are going out to stop it before it is too late, as a greatly wide question levitates above them all; who watches the Watchmen?

The series is based on the comic of the same name that deconstructed and satirized the modern-day concept of a superhero. The initial idea was to see what these superheroes would be like if they were to function in the real world, and constantly asked the question “Who watches the Watchmen,” meaning “They’re watching out for us, who’s watching out for them?”

It will be interesting to see how much that world has changed. New ideals, principles, and standards surely have been adopted by societies, which could change the way they view superheroes and vigilantes.

In addition to Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk also have starring roles.

HBO has scheduled Watchmen for a fall release.
