Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness won’t be the only film to see a hero from The Infinity Saga making a return. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will also be back for Thor: Love and Thunder. Yes, that will be a title, which Marvel announced today at San Diego Comic-Con. Taika Waititi, who was just confirmed to return to write and direct, will bring some major changes to the fourth Thor film. One of which will see Natalie Portman return to reprise her role as Jane Foster, and accept the hammer.
Borys Kit was among the first to report the breaking news. Here’s what he tweeted out:
FEMALE THOR in THOR … Natalie Portman to play her.
Plot wise, it looks like Hemsworth’s Thor has created a royal vacuum since he left and bestowed the title of King to Valkryie. Thompson, who was on SDCC stage, said the film would be about finding a queen.
Tessa Thompson: "As new king (of Asgard), she needs to find her queen. That will be the first order of business."
Previous reports have said that a scene was cut from Thor: Ragnarok that would have confirmed Valkyrie’s bisexuality. Honestly, if it hadn’t been cut, it wouldn’t have served the story or the character, and be just something to check off a box. But this film looks like it will embrace Valkyrie’s bisexuality as she will be looking for her queen.
It’s not exactly clear if any more writers will be brought on board so as to tell that portion of the story with authenticity, but Waititi is a great writer who knows about writing themes about home and identity because New Asgard is located on Earth and Thor is searching for a new purpose. So it should be interesting to see how Portman’s return makes an impact on Thor: Love and Thunder.
And Waititi is bringing a lot of the Thor: Ragnarok‘s 1980s sensibilities to Thor: Love and Thunder, which you can see in the He-Man-inspired title card.
Jane Foster taking the title of Thor for herself isn’t anything new. Marvel Comics announced that change way back in 2014, which was met with huge applause, and some negative reactions from trolls of course.
Anyways, Thor: Love and Thunder will arrive in theaters on November 5, 2021.
