Marvel Studios took the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 to show off their upcoming slate of films and TV shows that will appear on Disney+. While the presentation was more of what they’ve got cooking, there were a few interesting teases that went viral.
One of them was The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Although we weren’t there, Marvel shared a release date for the series. Not only that, but they’ve now teased a first-hand look at Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo. And this was no ordinary tease. It had him wearing that signature purple mask the villain is known for wearing in the comics. Check out the image below.
Brühl shared this first look over on his official Instagram account. The name Baron Zemo is actually shared by two people, Helumt Zemo and Heinrich Zemo. Helmut was the son of Heinrich, one of Captain America’s mortal enemies. He would eventually follow in his father’s footsteps as a supervillain using his family’s money and his own scientific know-how to recreate his father’s work.
However, the character’s depiction in the film is somewhat different. In it, he is a grieving father and husband who lost his family during the Avengers’ fight with Ultron in Sokovia. In order to get his revenge, Zemo masterminded a plan that would pit the Avengers against each other, eventually causing them the split apart. And it worked.
But how will things after the events of Avengers: Endgame? That part is still very much unclear. However, the photos give us a sense that the show will continue the political thriller genre. After all, Zemo isn’t all-powerful and wasn’t looking for world domination. But he is intent on remaining a threat to both Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). And if he is going to continue to do that, he should look really menacing. So the actor gave his followers a blurry look at his character wearing the purple mask:
Although you can’t see it very well, Brühl is wearing it. Although he never actually put it on in Captain America: Civil War. Concept art does show that Zemo wearing a mask was under consideration. Which would have stayed somewhat true to the comics. In it, the mask that covered Zemo’s face was permanently attached after a chemical known was Adhesive-X poured onto him.
Disney+ subscribers will have access to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on a weekly basis starting in the fall 2020.
